| Crawford County was created on March 12, 1800, from part of Allegheny County and named for Colonel William Crawford, a frontier hero. Meadville, the county seat, was named for its founder, David Mead, and incorporated as a borough on March 29, 1823, and as a city on February 15, 1866. The eight lakes of Crawford County draw outdoor enthusiasts to the area for hiking, sailing, swimming, fishing, camping, biking, canoeing and an endless variety of other activities. Pymatuning, a flood control reservoir created on the Shenango River along the Ohio border, is the largest body of water in Pennsylvania. At the Wildlife Museum, visitors can observe the state's largest colony of nesting eagles. At the Erie National Wildlife Refuge there are several photographic blinds available along its trails. Crawford County can accommodate your overnight requirements with nearly 1,000 hotel, motel and unique bed and breakfast rooms, or if your taste runs to the out-of-doors, there are numerous campgrounds located throughout the county. Each year, there are, throughout the county, many outdoor fairs and festivals with wonderful foods to taste and entertainment to enjoy. A warm welcome awaits in Crawford County! |
