Monroe County was created on April 1, 1836, from parts of Northampton and Pike Counties and named for President James Monroe. Stroudsburg, the county seat, was incorporated as a borough on February 6, 1815, and named for Jacob Stroud, a settler.

Here in the northeastern corner of Pennsylvania lie the breathtakingly beautiful Pocono Mountains, which includes Monroe County. The Poconos encompass 2400 square miles of wooded peaks and valleys with numerous sparkling lakes and rushing rivers, as well as some of the loveliest waterfalls in the East. In the midst of such extraordinary natural beauty are hundreds of attractions and places to stay, making this area the perfect place to vacation year-round.

If you come to the Poconos in the spring and summer, you can enjoy excellent fishing, white-water rafting, golf, hiking, tennis, mountain biking and all manner of water sports. You may want to visit in the autumn, when you can enjoy those activities with a brilliant mosaic of color as a backdrop. Winter blankets the Poconos in white, transforming them into a playground for skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and sleigh rides.

Whatever the season, you'll find the Poconos offer great shopping and interesting historical tours, all of which makes the Poconos ideal for a family vacation, honeymoon, business or corporate meeting, motorcoach trip, convention or a couples getaway - any time of the year.
