Tioga County, PA, located in Pennsylvania's "Northern Tier" of counties is the proud home of the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. It is a land of pristine wilderness where modern conveniences are only a stone's throw away. Fishing? One hundred miles of stocked streams and seven lakes. Canoeing? You haven't done it until you've done the Pine Creek through the Grand Canyon in the spring. Hunting? Some of the best in the East.
Tioga County (population 41,126) was created on March 26, 1804 from part of Lycoming County and named for the Tioga River. Tioga is derived from an Indian word meaning the forks of a stream. Wellsboro, the county seat, was named for the Wells family, prominent in the locality.
Bring the family to the fall foliage season in September and October. Or to the PA State Laurel festival at blossom time in June. Or hiking and biking on Pennsylvania's longest "Rails to Trails" trail. Winter time is for skiing, snowmobiling, fishing and skating. Tioga's mountains are dotted with campgrounds and lodges.
All of this is focused on the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania - designated as a natural and scenic area.
